Erling Haaland scored twice in Manchester City’s 4-1 Premier League victory at bottom-dwelling Southampton on Saturday, his first game back from injury. This victory kept pressure on league-leading Arsenal.In the penultimate second of the first half, Haaland showed no symptoms of fatigue by scoring the opening goal for the guests. He met Kevin De Bruyne’s cross with a forceful close-range header, leaving Southampton keeper Gavin Bazunu with no chance.

In the 58th minute, Jack Grealish doubled City’s lead by running onto another exquisite pass from De Bruyne and shooting a left-foot drive that Bazunu saved. The winger then slammed home the rebound with his right foot. Ten minutes later, Grealish switched roles, sprinting down the left before chipping a cross to Haaland, who acrobatically volleyed the ball home for his 30th league goal of the year.
Julian Alvarez took his place, and even though Southampton’s Sekou Mara scored a goal as a substitute in the 72nd minute, they then gave up a penalty, which Alvarez converted to give City a three-goal advantage. After 29 games of the 38-game season, City is still in second place with 67 points, five points behind Arsenal, who will play Liverpool on Sunday. With 23 points, Southampton is last and four points behind Everton in 17th place.
