When Barcelona’s vice president, Rafael Yuste was asked about the rumours that Lionel Messi could be coming back to Barcelona, he said he would ‘love’ to see him come back. Afterward, Barcelona star Gerard Pique was asked about the matter in an interview. He said, “He knows Yuste and is a wonderful person who will always tell you what you want to hear.”

He also said that if the transfer was forced, it could turn out to be counterproductive for Barcelona. He added, “Forcing the situation, however, can be counterproductive. Pique was a dear friend to Lionel Messi when they played together in Barcelona. They both came from La Masia and played together for 14 years. They won 8 La Liga titles, 3 Champions League trophies, and 3 Club World Cups together. However, after Lionel Messi had to leave Barcelona in 2021 owing to wage issues, many rumours emerged that Pique had a hand in the matter.

Barcelona went into great debt under their infamous president Josep Bartomeu and to keep the club under fair play regulations, many players took pay cuts. Lionel Messi’s contract with Barcelona was due to end in 2021 and he agreed to a 50% pay cut as well, but he was still costing the club more than they could afford.

Messi’s contract with PSG ends this summer. Even though PSG management and coach Christophe Galtier have said that they are trying to renew the player’s contract, there has been no solid news on the matter. Other than Barcelona, David Beckham’s MLS side Inter Miami has also shown great interest to bring Messi on board.
